Difference Between Float and Trickle Charger
Difference Between Float and Trickle Charger
The difference between a float (or battery tender) and trickle charger is that a float charger will only turn on and charge your battery when it has self-discharged below a certain level, whereas a trickle charger continuously emits a small current of electricity regardless of the charge level or even if it’s full.

current is _drawn_ it is not pushed. The battery will only draw as much current as is required. You could set your dumb charger to 100A but if the battery is 98% charged, it will not _draw_ more than a couple of amps.
You dont PUSH current into something
Seems like you have a fundamental misunderstanding of electronics
The old school dumb chargers are good to try to stuff some charge into a low battery, so a smart charger will detect and charge it. And also to boost start with a dead battery. Thanks for the video.
Thanks
That old battery charger is very useful for desulfation repair.
If you’re swapping out a battery but you need to maintain power to your car’s computer while removing the old battery, which system is best to provide power?
FYI old chargers are good when you have specials projects if you know what you are doing. I got ride of mine but had a project which I needed to use an old charger, baking soda laundry soap and a hunk of metal which I needed to chemically remove the rust.
4-amps is not adequate to charge a 200Ah AGM battery in any amount of time. Most AGMs are C20 and require a charging amperage of 20% of capacity or a 20amp charger. Minimum of 10%. They also are designed to discharge at that rate. Don’t hook up a 1kw inverter drawing 80amps to one 200Ah battery. Also a 200Ah AGM battery completely discharged that needs 200Ah is toast.
Now that LifePO4 prices have dropped i’d change over to the modern world, then you will need to update your videos. PS, I like the balloon analogy .
Good advice. I have been through many failed battery maintainers used on five vehicles, two outside.. The Delran Battery Tender is the only model that has lasted for years on my five vehicles. I use two of them on Subarus that are daily drivers. Modern cars only have 80 percent charge after a drive. They are not like the older cars. Their alternators don’t really charge the battery, they just "maintain"it. So the batteries are chronically low.
Excellent
I was wondering if all Marine Batteries are deep cycle & glass matt?
Best explanation video I have found about this subject, thanks! do you have any toughts on the NOCO GENIUS chargers?
Thanks god bless
A few years ago I bought at the farm coop a "genius charger" , 26 amp. My intent was to keep my 2-way radio battery charged on float mode. It failed twice. First by losing output. Dead battery. Next was serious overcharge. Dead battery. They had one in my local batteries plus store which I connected on. They weren’t interested.
Q: How old is that Shumacher?. I have one and mine looks more tech than the one your showing
For a really low or dead flooded battery, the analog charger is the better charger, to maintain a battery at full charge the smart charger is the better one. Btw the only difference between the flooded lead acid battery with and without caps, with no caps they are designed with a vapor trap and the condensation is returned to the battery, and yes you can add dielectric, water to the battery’s with no caps. PS you as a common person doesn’t have a $2K battery charger, but your local auto parts store just might and that battery charger can reconditioned your battery for ya, not one of the chargers pictured in this video are large enough to do a full cycle regen for your battery.

My Kisea inverter/charger, with transfer switch, contains a float charge under the lithium battery setting, which I don’t understand, because lithium batteries do not need a float charge. Is this float charge therefore detrimental? My inverter is hooked up to my pellet stove, to cover for power outages when they occur. So it is hooked up all the time.
Huh fews day ago i watch the video abt window wiper rubber replacement now i watch this hell yea more money for my pocket heheheheh
20min later….& no mention of the ‘automatic’ (& switchable) charger! Manual & automatic, high & low amp charger settings, that look just like the charger you say is useless.
Exquisite explanation.
Does the Deltran Batt Tender have the desultation feature? How do I know when a battery needs to be desultafied? Is there a 5amp Deltran available now? Thx so much for this video. It was very informative. Hoping to hear from you soon!
I like the form factor of the ‘wall wart’ type charger tenders, like the Noco Genius 1, Battery Tender JR, LST and the many clones. Would you consider reviewing some of those? I have the LST and it’s supposed to have 4 voltage modes, I don’t know what they are though.
..If I understand it correctly …batteries RT12120EV with 14ah should never be charged with 8ah charger … so need to look for 1.4ah charger or lower … good ( or may I use higher amp like 2-3 ?)
This has been the best battery-charger related video I have seen to date. Thank you!
Why would using a 20 amp charger on a 50 Amp hour battery over charge it? I thought they were microprocessor controlled.
Can you use these with a flat tool battery in any way,
TOPDON T30000 And GOOLOO 4000A
I use an old trickle charger for zinc plating. No need to throw it away.
The older dumb charger is very useful and better than the newer smart charger is some instances. I bet the Schumacher is not working now. ??? I have been threw 7 various models from Schumacher in the last 10 – 12 years because they always stop working for one reason or another.
Don’t buy the called smart. Chargers. There junk. Go to yard sale flea market etc etc and buy a old school one. Like the one on the far left of video. The one ones if they don’t see. A certain amount of volts. They won’t turn on.
I don’t understand how can you overcharge a battery when you’re applying the rated voltage. Once it gets to that voltage it will stop, unless you’re giving more voltage than what’s it rated for it shouldn’t overcharge.
The ‘dumb’ charger that this guy mentions, can actually charge two dead 12 volt batteries used on a Dodge ram 5.9l, 2500 truck engine for starting with no problems at all. The so- called ‘smart’ shit kept showing dead battery and shutting down. Even though I tried boost charging for a few minutes to give the cells a jolt, it kept showing dead batteries. Looks like the ‘dumb’ charger is good at injecting life back into the batteries and maintaining the charge.🤔👍👍👍
YouTube is using AI to delete relevant and important factual comments. It’s NOT competent and arbitrarily lacking common sense. If YouTube keeps this up, I will change platforms.
How come you didn’t include the Optimate brand?
Being that my generation is a bunch of slow in the head folks, yes the newer smart style is better. Basically no brains. Um that old style stuff u can blow up a battery.
Great video thanks. I have a totally flat small 12V battery in my portable generator. I also have an older Battery Tender Jr. Did I hear you right that if the small battery is completely dead, the Battery Tender will not start charging? I attached it today and I have a red light on the tender. I thought that it might take a long time but now I’m wondering if it’s doing nothing based on what you said.
Very clear explanation! Thank you!
You mentioned you keep a volt meter connected to your batteries. Do you have a link to that volt meter? Is this different from a multimeter?
It would be great to have an led read out that’s constantly on while I’m charging without having to turn on my multimeter and checking the voltage.
Will the battery Tender charge Oddessy AGW performance
Great video! Just want to mention. Oxygen is not explosive in its self. Oxygen only make something that’s burning, burn faster. It’s dangerous if around anything that could catch fire, but the oxygen itself is not explosive.
This is the best YT video that I have seen. I have an RV and a Marine Deep Cycle 12 V. I am upset because I just spent $100 on a Schumacher 15 amp charger. I do have it outside but under my RV (it has ventilation) but I do not want to harm my battery. It is 11/24 so I am hoping that they have improved it. I was wondering can any of them be outside in weather since it is an RV?
I have used the Battery MINDer on my cars for over 25 years. Recently I replaced the battery in my 2002 Corvette after 13 YEARS. The OEM battery in the Vette lasted for over 8 YEARS. For some reason, nobody on YouTube seems to mention these devices. The big key with the Minder is that it uses a high FREQUENCY (not VOLTAGE) pulse to break up sulfite crystals. Therefore, no overvoltage. I connect the device to the battery if I will not be driving the car for 4 days.
10:05 ‘ this is the one that stays hooked up to my batteries at all times’ … yo, even while your driving down the road?
Just givin’ you a hard time lol, couldn’t resist.
This was the best video I’ve seen so far on the subject, great explanations and analogies! you should be a teacher! Thanks for the great video 🙂
Have you ever seen people using a stick welder to boil flooded batteries? They basically open the caps, fill them up, and boil them hard to get rid of the crystals and plating you’re talking about. I’ve seen two videos where they did it to some degree of success.
Thanks
I have an RV and it is hooked up to a 30 amp I had installed but it did not charge my new Marine Deep Cycle Battery 12V while plugged in and I was wondering why not? My battery was almost dead when I went to hook up.
i am a bit confused as to why you would be charging lead acid batteries inside your house to begin with. but a decnt explanation of the rest of it.
Thank you. good video
Great video! Very informative. Thanks
