    So, why are these not replaced with electric motor regeneration and a battery? Instead of using energy to slow the vehicle, capture the energy with the same level of braking and use it to assist with moving off or cruising.

    Most retarders AREN’T electromagnetic. Most retarders interrupt valve timing, to deny a power stroke and burn some fuel in the exhaust manifold to wind the turbo up.
    Our 2024 Volvo has a 450 horsepower engine but the retarder generates over 600 horsepower of braking.
